Dichroic filters

Available in 16 standard colors and several different sizes.

Dichroic filters are made by the vacuum deposition onto a substrate of  borosilicate glass of a dielectric coating,  i. e. very thin layers of dielectric materials such as silicon oxide and titanium with different refractive index. These very thin layers (some dozens of nanometers each layer) by interacting with light   wavelengths filter light and create different colours..

For example, in order to obtain a cyan we should block all radiations but the ones with a wavelenght lower than 530nm. The other way round, to get a red we should let pass the radiations with a wavelength higher than 610nm and block the rest.
All radiations which are not transmitted, are not absorbed by the filter but reflect on it, preventing overheating. This feature allows the use of dichroic filter many different applications when dealing with  high temperatures.

Besides highly specialized sectors, dichroic filters are also used by the lighting industry and in the show business sector to colour light and to correct the colour temperature of a light source.
